Netflix Nutrition Documentaries: How To Talk About Them With Clients and Friends

by | Apr 21, 2021

Every time Netflix nutrition documentaries come out, there always seems to be an air of hype around them. After all Netflix has 203.7 million paid subscribers as of 2020, so it would only make sense that anything showcased on Netflix would be talked about. However as RDs, we know the importance of being cautious of what nutrition sources to trust since pseudoscience is constantly on the rise and all around us. But the question is what should you do when a nutrition coaching client or a non RD friend asks you what you think about some of these documentaries? It’s a simple question with no easy answer. So that is what we will go over today in this article. However before we do. First allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Tony Stephan and I’m a dietitian business coach. I help RDs make more IMPACT and more INCOME through nutrition coaching. However before I became a dietitian business coach, I was an RD nutrition coach (just like you!). I served thousands of nutrition coaching clients over a time span of 12 years. My successful nutrition coaching business is what led me to where I am today. Now allow me to share with you how to navigate conversations about Netflix nutrition documentaries with your clients and non RD friends.

Netflix Nutrition Documentaries: Show Support And Listen

As RDs, we often can often spot pseudoscience in nutrition from a mile away whether it’s a blog post, a podcast, or Netflix documentary. However, many of your clients and non RD friends may not be able to. That’s why it’s so important to always show support and genuinely listen when your clients or non RD friends start talking about nutrition topics that err on the side of pseudoscience. The best thing you can do is listen to their thoughts and feelings about the topic at hand.

When you genuinely listen to your clients and non RD friends, it shows them that you care about them and the decisions they make. You’ll hear me say that we have two ears and one mouth for a reason! Listen to them and ask questions about why they feel what they feel about the documentary. When you genuinely listen, it builds trust and shows them that you care. When in doubt, always genuinely listen and show support first!

Netflix Nutrition Documentaries: Aim To Be Helpful

As an RD, it can be so tempting to tell your clients and non RD friends directly that what they are watching is pseudoscience. However oftentimes it’s imperative that our clients and non RD friends come up with a conclusion on their own. We can’t force our clients or friends to dispel pseudoscience, but we can provide help and support as they navigate the nutrition topic. The best way to do that is to tell them the facts in a helpful manner. Telling them the facts could look like explaining to your non RD friends and clients that there is limited research on the particular nutrition topic they are asking about or that maybe there is another route they could consider outside of what the documentary mentioned.

It’s important to aim to be helpful and to not seem as if you are “trying to prove them wrong.” If you come across as trying to prove someone wrong, it might hinder your relationship with them. Remember, you always want to be an ally to your nutrition coaching clients and your non RD friends in the realm of nutrition.

How To Talk To Clients About The Latest Netflix Nutrition Documentary: Bottom Line

There will always be another Netflix nutrition documentary, podcast, or blog that shares nutrition information among the masses that may not align with current science. Although we can’t eliminate the problem, we can be a part of the solution. As an RD, our job is to be an ally to those who seek to find efficient nutrition approaches that best suits their lifestyle. Being an ally means genuinely listening and providing gentle guidance when appropriate.

Before starting ANY nutrition protocol, whether it’s you or your client, you should always ask this important question: Can I do this for the rest of my life? If you even hesitate before answering the question, the dietary protocol may not be for you. That’s why it’s so important to understand what the nutrition protocol entails before deciding to commit to it. The great thing is that we (RDs) can help guide clients and non clients toward nutrition approaches that will best help them achieve their goals through being informed about current topics and trends in the realm of nutrition.
