Never Stop On Your Nutrition Coach Journey

by | Jul 2, 2020

As a dietitian nutrition coach, I tell my clients that through their fitness and nutrition journeys, it is only natural that they encounter bumps along the way.  These bumps may come in the form of major life events, work overwhelm, or injury.

It is often as dietitians we hear, “I’ll pick everything back up after [INSERT EVENT HERE] is done”.  Why do we default to this response?

As a dietitian nutrition coach, I tell my clients, “There’s nothing wrong with thinking this way.” It gives us comfort to be able to put things to the side when things are hard and resume when life eases up a bit.

However, this false security is actually the truest way to disrupt and destroy your progress and plans for better nutrition.

The main issue with resorting to this option is that it promotes the habit of quitting and resuming and forgoes the importance of sustainability and perseverance in our daily nutrition habits.  90 day programs and instant transformation & gratification traps hardwire us to put in 100% of our effort into a few days and burn out at the end.  We wait for a period of time in our lives for things to be perfect for us to start that fitness/nutrition program.  Trust me, I know how that feels.  We don’t want to start something that we won’t be able to put our full effort in because we fear that we won’t get that much out.

Analysis paralysis will stop us from even passing the start line if we believe we can’t finish.

Unfortunately, Life doesn’t wait for us.  Life will continue whether we like it or not.  We must be content with the fact that a little bit of effort is a lot better than nothing.  This goes for our fitness and nutrition.  We may not have the time to go through a 90 minute intense workout but with the 30 minutes we have, we can go through moderate exercises or a short jog.  We may not be in a situation where we have the most nutritious options laid out before us.  But with what we have, how can we take action to make it work.

My friends, we must accept that There Will Never Be A Better Time Than Now To Start.  Things won’t get easier down the road.  The only easy day was yesterday.  We have to do the best we can with what we got.  We Have To Keep Going.  With the “All or Nothing” mentality we risk falling into burnouts and breaks in our progress.  We have to sustainably keep going forward.

Actionable Step #1: Tone It Down When You Feel Like Pausing

Whenever you feel the dreaded burnout creeping forward, instead of pausing your workout or nutrition, tone it down to a tolerable level.  Instead of that intensive workout or run, try a workout with less weight that focuses on form or jogging a shorter distance.  Ask yourself: “If I were to tone it down a bit, what would my nutrition & health look like?”

Actionable Step #2 Create a Plan When Busy Times Happen

Our initial plans and intentions are bound to fail at some point.  When they do, what can we do to face those challenges?  Think about what is the bare minimum that you can do when these situations happen and obstacles are most likely to get in your way.  For example: Monday Night Football with some buddies might result in wings and beer.  Look for steps that you can take to accommodate your situation such as looking for some veggie sticks to put on your plate or getting a napkin/paper towel to get the oil off of the wing before you eat them.

Actionable Step #3 Analyze The Minimum That You Can Do

As I mentioned earlier, we tend to fall into an all-or-nothing approach when it comes to my nutrition.  Work with every situation, whether good or bad, that is given to you and look for the minimum steps that you can take to make the situation a little bit better. A great dietitian nutrition coach knows when to stop, and when to keep going.

There will never be a perfect time to start.  Remember to just keep going one step at a time.  If you take a small step towards the destination that you want to be, you’ll get there eventually.  Safe journeys friend 🙂
